An extremely rare variety
Lot 1717
UNCERTAIN GERMANIC TRIBES, Aurum Barbarorum. Late 3rd-early 4th centuries. 'Aureus' (Subaeratus, 21 mm, 3.00 g, 12 h), 'Probus Group A'. Imitating Probus, 276-282. Helmeted and cuirassed bust of Probus to left, holding spear over his right shoulder and shield on his left. Rev. Victory driving slow quadriga to right, holding wreath in her right hand and palm frond in her left. Pierced and with breaks in plating, otherwise, good fine.

Interestingly, the quadriga on the Probus coins of the Aurum Barbarorum otherwise always advances to the left, making this an extremely rare variety.
